The first meeting sets the tone for the entire arrangement. Good preparation helps all parties – you, your child and the caregiver – feel comfortable and at ease.
1 How to prepare
- Write down a list of questions in advance – in the moment, you'll forget some
- Prepare a summary about your child – routine, favourite games, any allergies
- Agree on a time plan – how long you have and what you want to cover
- Inform your child in a way appropriate for their age – "Someone is coming to play with you"
2 What to observe during the meeting
- Communication – does the caregiver speak naturally and listen to you?
- Approach to the child – does the interaction feel natural or forced?
- Their reactions – do they ask questions and show interest in your needs?
- Your gut feeling – do you feel comfortable? Would you leave your child with them?
Intuition is a valid signal. If something doesn't feel right, even without a rational reason, listen to it.
3 After the meeting
- Talk to your child – how do they react, what do they say
- Reflect with a little distance – don't decide immediately under the impression
- If you're interested, arrange a trial session as soon as possible
The goal of the first meeting
It's not about making a final decision. It's about finding out whether it makes sense to continue – and giving natural chemistry a chance to develop.
